Whether of not if walking more is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, you’re going to want to check this App out. It’s called Sweatcoin and it’s paying people (like you and I) just for walking outside. (It uses GPS, so while it may initially calculate steps taken indoors, once it goes through their algorithm, you’ll be credited for your outdoor steps only)
I just started using this app, but I’m already excited! When I’m preparing for a Disney Vacation, one thing that I like to do is get out and walk more. You can easily walk 10 miles a day during your Vacation, so if you’re not used to walking that much, your legs will be in for a rude awakening. I don’t want something like sore muscles to ruin my vacation! My next Disney Vacation may be months away, but it’s never too early to get up and start walking more!
What can you redeem your points for?
Like most of these apps, you can redeem for PayPal, gift cards, and prizes. But, if you’re expecting them to be $1 gift cards to places you’ll never go to then you’re going to be pleasantly surprised. I haven’t used the app long, but currently there are $50 Amazon gift cards and prizes like a curved Samsung TV available to be redeemed. Now those are things worth working for.
Pooling your points…
What’s great about this app is that it allows you to send the Sweatcoins that you earned to a friend. This could prove especially helpful if you’re saving for something with a friend or a partner (like a vacation) and neither one of you have enough Sweatcoins to redeem that gift card on your own. Think of how much you can add to your Vacation Fund when you’re working with someone. 😉
Weighing the good and the bad…
The prizes on this app are more expensive than most of the apps that I have on my phone. So, of course, this means you have to work harder to earn them. But, regardless of the name, you don’t have to break an actual sweat to earn coins. I earn credit just for doing everyday tasks like taking my dog out to do her business and walking into the grocery store.
But the one thing that I find hard to do is not close down the app. Apparently, in order to receive credit, it has to remain open. If you do accidentally close down the app, it will immediately send you a message just like this one…
While I haven’t noticed any significant drain to my battery, I am someone who likes to close down apps I’m not currently using, so this has been the biggest adjustment to make regarding this app.
All in all, I think that the pros outweigh the cons. I’m going to be walking outside anyway, so why not use that to make a little something to help fund my vacations? What could be simpler?
