Planning 101 Saving For A Vacation Vacation Budgeting Vacation Planner

5 Simple Tips To Stay Within Budget On Your Disney Vacation

October 7, 2024

When you’re planning a Disney vacation, sticking to a budget can feel like a big challenge. And with the latest study showing that a shocking 45% of families are going into debt to go to Walt Disney World, it’s natural to feel like going to Disney on a budget is impossible.

But, no one should be going into debt to go on vacation! With a little planning and some know-how, you can make your Disney dreams come true without breaking the bank.

5 Simple Tips To Stay Within Budget On Your Disney Vacation

Use the Disney Ticket Price Calendar

Forget Crowd Calendars! They’re rarely accurate anymore anyway. When you’re trying to plan a Disney vacation on a budget, the calendar you want to be looking at is the Disney ticket price calendar.

Of course, I always recommend booking a Disney vacation package. But, when you’re thinking about your vacation budget, seeing the per-day prices helps answer the question, “When is it cheapest to go to Walt Disney World?”

Disney charges you the same rate based on the first Park day. So, if you choose to start your visit on August 3rd, you’ll pay $125 per person, per day, even though ticket prices cost less later in the week.

By choosing a cheaper date for your first Park day, you can lock in the lower ticket rate and save a few dollars. And remember – prices fluctuate based on demand. So when ticket prices are lower, Resort rates often do, too.

By strategically picking your start date, you can maximize your savings without sacrificing any of the magic.

Disney Gift Cards: The Smart Way to Stretch Your Budget

We frequently hear about buying discounted Gift Cards at Target (with the RedCard), Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club to get an instant discount. But, what is the best way to use them?

You can use Disney Gift Cards to pay for:

  • Your Vacation Package – including your deposit
  • Tickets – including Parties and After Hours Events
  • Food – including tip at sit down restaurants
  • Purchase Memory Maker – if you didn’t add it to your vacation package, you can still buy it with gift cards.
  • Souvenirs – you can use them in the Parks and Disney-owned stores at Disney Springs

Whether you’re covering your entire trip or just using them to manage day-to-day spending while at Walt Disney World, Disney Gift Cards are a fantastic way to stick to your budget—especially if you bought them at a discount.

Combine Gift Cards
If you’re buying Gift Cards in small amounts, it can be a pain to keep track of all those cards. But, by using DisneyGiftCard.com, you can combine multiple cards into one, making it much easier to manage.

Keep in mind that Disney Gift Cards have a $1,000 limit per card. So, if you’re budgeting for a larger trip, you might still need to keep a few extra cards handy—but at least it won’t be as overwhelming.

Book Early For Best Rates

One of the best-kept secrets when budgeting for a Disney vacation is knowing when to book. As the holiday season approaches, many families tend to wait until after the holidays to make next year’s travel plans—often after assessing their spending. However, this strategy could actually cost you more.

Disney can increase their prices at any point during the year, but I’ve noticed that when my clients choose to wait until after the holidays, the prices they end up paying are often a bit higher. It may not be a significant increase—usually a few dollars here and there—but when you’re trying to stick to a budget, every penny counts.

By paying your $200 deposit before the next price hike, you’ll lock in the current rates. Plus, if you need to cancel, Disney’s flexible cancellation policies offer a safety net. So, here’s my advice – don’t wait—lock in those prices before they increase!

Take Advantage of Free or Low Cost Activities

It’s common to think that if you’re at Walt Disney World, all of your days need to be spent inside the Parks. But, there’s other ways to “do Disney.” And many of these ways work with a limited budget. These are just a few of our favorites:

  • Disney Springs: This shopping and entertainment area is free to enter and offers a variety of activities. Enjoy live music, window shop, or catch a free performance at the Amphitheater. Plus, there are numerous dining options if you want to grab a bite to eat.
  • Resort Hopping: Look for free experiences such as movies under the stars, campfires with marshmallow roasting, cultural activities, using night vision goggles to view animals at night, or even fun scavenger hunts. If you have a few extra dollars to spend, you can find low-cost activities. If you’re staying at a Disney Resort, be sure to ask about Magical Extras. This will give you a variety of discounts on things like dining, entertainment, and shopping.
  • Visit the BoardWalk: I feel like the Disney BoardWalk is more geared towards adults, especially at night. But, families have fun here, as well. It’s a charming area with beautiful views of the water, street performers, and lively nightlife. During the day, you can simply take in the sights, play carnival games, or ride surrey bikes- if exercise if your thing.

By choosing to add these free or low-cost activities into your Disney vacation plans, you can create memorable experiences without blowing your entire vacation budget. Plus, you’ll have the chance to discover more of what Disney has to offer – outside of the Parks!

Mix Regular Park Tickets with After Hours Events

You may be thinking – “But they’re so expensive!” Hear me out…

Regular Park tickets give you all the daytime experiences – shows, characters, magic, etc… But if your focus is solely to ride all the attractions, consider swapping a regular Theme Park day for an After Hours event or special party. These events have fewer crowds compared to daytime visits—so you’ll get more done in a shorter amount of time.

As for price, Multi Pass and Single Pass aren’t available during these events – meaning you’re not spending more for shorter wait times. Plus, After Hours events often include free drinks and snacks – helping you stretch your food budget. Is it the most nutritious way to fill your belly? Nope – but at least you won’t go back to your Resort hungry!

This not only helps you stay within your budget but also provides a more “VIP experience.” Just remember to check event schedules and availability to plan your days effectively!
