With Disney’s New Premier Pass Coming, Is a Budget Vacation Still Possible?

October 18, 2024

Planning a Disney vacation is already a roller coaster ride — and then Disney introduces something like the Premier Pass Lightning Lane. But if you’re like many families, you’re thinking, Can we really afford this? or Is Disney still an option with our family’s budget?

Here’s the good news: even with the Premier Pass and other tempting upgrades, a Disney vacation is still absolutely possible on a budget. Yes, sometimes it takes a little creativity to still get that dream vacation. But, it’s absolutely possible.

Is a budget vacation still possible at Walt Disney World?

What is the Premier Pass?

Contrary to what you’ve been seeing on social media over the past few days, Premier Passes is not a new concept for Disney. Disney has Premier Passes in every Park overseas. And while they’re all a little bit different, none of them is something that I would call “cheap”. And yet – people still buy it.

The Premier Pass at Walt Disney World and Disneyland will give Guests a more convenient way to skip the lines. It’s a premium upgrade for anyone who doesn’t want to be glued to their phones or has no idea how to keep track of all of their Lightning Lanes. And just like the Premier Passes overseas, you can’t use the Premier Pass on the same ride more than one time.

But here’s the thing: Disney already has a ton of ways to maximize your Park time. Does the Premier Pass sound like a less stressful way to visit the Disney Parks? Absolutely. But, is it necessary? No.

Who is Premier Pass for?

With the costs ranging from about $200 – $400, and it’s only available for Guests staying at a Deluxe Resort (at least for now), it’s not something that families on a tight budget would even be considering. This will be an option for Guests going on once-in-a-lifetime vacations or Guests with huge budgets. And even then, I would recommend a VIP tour over a Premier Pass.

The truth is – Premier Pass isn’t going to be something that will be in most people’s budget.

But just because the Premier Pass might not be for everyone, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a magical vacation. There are still plenty of ways to save money without sacrificing any of the Disney fun.

Be Strategic With Your Planning

I’m not just talking about avoiding the peak holiday rush (although that helps). Timing is everything when it comes to saving at Disney. Although Disney can increase prices at any point during the year, it’s more common in the later months. So, if you can book your trip before that happens, you’re already starting your trip with a better price than waiting until after the holidays or until there’s a new promotion.

I always recommend booking before Disney drops a new promotion. Disney packages only require a $200 deposit, no matter the total price or how many people you’re traveling with. Once your deposit is made, your rate is locked in – the price will never go up. And since you can apply new promotions to existing reservations, being strategic about when you start planning your vacation does make a difference in your overall budget.

Take Advantage of Free (or Almost Free) Disney Magic

Some of the best experiences at Disney don’t cost extra. Sure, everyone is going to be talking about the Premier Pass for awhile and how easy it is to use compared to booking each individual Lightning Lane. But rides aren’t the only things to do in Walt Disney World.

What many people don’t realize is that staying on Disney property comes with added perks than just getting into the Parks early and the ability to book Lightning Lanes 4 days earlier than everyone else. You also get a Magical Extras card, which not only gives you discounts at various places around Walt Disney World, you get a free round of mini golf for your entire family. And if you’re traveling in 2025, you’re also going to get a free day in the Water Parks when you stay at a Disney Resort.

And these are just 2 examples of things you can do outside of the Theme Parks. Sure, the Parks are amazing. But, sometimes the small, free moments are what your kids will talk about for years. It’s those little things that remind us why Disney is so magical in the first place.

Be Smart About Where You Stay

Here’s the thing – While there are plenty of fantastic hotels surrounding Walt Disney World, many families focus solely on the price tag without considering all the hidden costs that can come with staying offsite. And if price is going to be the deciding factor, you’ll definitely want to account for these potential expenses:

  • Resort fees: Many offsite hotels charge daily fees, typically ranging from $25 – $40, added at checkout.
  • Overnight parking: Some hotels charge extra to park your car.
  • Theme park parking: In 2024, parking at Disney Parks is $30 per day.
  • Shuttle costs from Good Neighbor Hotels: Some are free, but others charge a fee.
  • Rental car, gas, and tolls: All can add up quickly.

Not every offsite hotel will have all these expenses, but if they do, it’s important to budget for them. Imagine planning to rely on your hotel’s shuttle service, only to find out it runs only a few times per day, drops you off far from the park entrances, and — oh yeah — requires a reservation you didn’t know anything about PLUS $5 per person. For a family of 5 planning 4 Park days, that’s an extra $100 you didn’t account for. And when you’re already working with a tight budget, that can feel like a major blow.

These kinds of unexpected costs can ruin the entire trip and leave families frustrated — sometimes to the point where they swear off Disney vacations altogether.

So, do your homework and account for everything. When all is said and done, you might end up paying the same (or even more) for an offsite hotel.

Budget Enough For Food

Recent reports show that 45% of families are going into debt to pay for their Disney vacation with 65% saying the high cost of food and beverages was the cause.

The cheapest option is always to bring your own food. However, that’s often not realistic. Instead, I recommend budgeting thoroughly for your meals and loading all that money onto a Disney Gift Card. While some might argue this takes away from the spontaneity of discovering new snacks, it ensures you won’t go into debt feeding your family — and, honestly, that’s always my goal.

Personally, I use a mix of Table Service, Quick Service, and bringing our own food to keep costs in check for my family of 5.

Here’s how we typically eat when we don’t have a Dining Plan:

  • Breakfast: Most mornings, we eat in the room. We have groceries delivered to the Resort (so we’re not just eating pop-tarts and granola bars). We usually budget for one Table Service breakfast per trip since it’s cheaper than lunch or dinner.
  • Snacks: We bring snacks into the Parks but budget for one Disney snack per person per day.
  • Lunch/Dinner: We aim for a late lunch or early dinner to avoid crowds, budgeting for adult-sized meals for everyone except our 3-year-old to ensure we all get enough to eat.
  • Evening snacks: If anyone is still hungry back at the room, we have snacks ready, or they can use their daily snack credit if it wasn’t spent earlier.

This balance allows us to enjoy a little bit of everything, without breaking the bank. We typically go home with about $40 left on our Gift Card at the end of our trip.

Pro tip: A small cooler backpack can easily fit water bottles and snacks without being a hassle. And they’re water resistent – perfect for those Florida rainshowers.

Prioritize What Matters Most

I know it can be tough to say no when every family member, neighbor, and co-worker is raving about the amazing things they did on their latest Disney vacation. But that’s the beauty of customized itineraries! Not every experience at Disney has to come with an extra cost.

Take a moment to ask yourself what’s truly important to your family. Is it riding as many attractions as possible? Is it taking your little one to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique? Or is it something completely different?

When you prioritize, you’ll find that skipping a few things others claimed was a “must-do” doesn’t take away from the fun—it makes room for different types of magic.
