How to Make Disney Magical for Kids Of All Ages

December 3, 2024

For many, Disney isn’t just another Theme Park, it’s a place where magic comes to life for everyone – not just for the kids. But honestly, navigating Disney with kids can feel overwhelming – and this is coming from a Certified Travel Advisor and mother of 3 with a 15-year age gap.

And since I’ve had my share of experiences traveling with kids of all ages, I want to share my secrets to creating a magical vacation for every member of your family.

Disney Tips for Babies and Toddlers

When you’re planning a Disney vacation with babies and toddlers, it’s all about keeping them comfortable while maximizing the magic. Here are some practical tips to avoid those famous meltdowns:

  • Baby Care Centers: Disney’s Baby Care Centers (located in all Disney parks) are quiet, air-conditioned spaces to feed, change, or simply relax for a few minutes away from the crowds. While these areas aren’t fancy, they’re lifesavers during a long park day.
  • Mid-day Breaks: I’m always going to recommend heading back to your Disney Resort for a mid-day break. But if that’s not an option, letting your little one sleep in their stroller works perfectly. Need some AC? Consider shows or attractions like Carousel of Progress. Despite the noise, my son once slept through the entire show of MuppetVision 3D!
  • Character Dining: If your kids aren’t afraid of characters, skip the long lines with Disney character dining. You’ll meet about 4 characters per meal, and since they come to your table, there’s no waiting in line.

Disney with School-Aged Kids

Disney is an absolute dream for school-aged kids. When you think about bringing your kids to a Disney Park, especially for the first time, this is the age group that typically comes to mind. However, there are still some challenges. But, with just a little planning, you’re guaranteed to have those memories that last long after you leave the Parks.

  • Immerse Them in the Magic: Kids at this age really feel that “Disney magic”. Take them to Toy Story Land or Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios or Pandora – The World of Avatar at Animal Kingdom. Trust me, there’s nothing like watching their jaws drop when they see the things they’ve previously only seen on TV right in front of them.
  • Balance Rides and Entertainment: Pro tip: alternating between high-energy rides and calmer shows is key to avoiding meltdowns (for kids and parents). After a big thrill like Expedition Everest, take a break with The Festival of the Lion King. The music, costumes, and acrobatics? It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Plus, if you get a good seat, your child may be asked to join the cast on stage.
  • Interactive Experiences: Disney is not only rides and characters. My older kids always loved collecting Wilderness Explorer badges at Animal Kingdom—it’s like a mini adventure within the Park. And EPCOT’s scavenger hunts? Total lifesavers when you need to keep them entertained.

Disney Fun for Teens

Disney with teens might feel a little different, but it’s still magical—just in a more high-energy, “please don’t embarrass me, Mom” kind of way. They’re here for the thrill rides, the snacks, and (let’s be honest) maybe a little social media-worthy content. Sure, they may still take a picture with a character to make mom happy, but there’s a few things you can do to keep them happy at the same time.

  • Seek Out Thrill Rides: If it spins, drops, or shoots into the sky, they’re all in. Seek out rides like Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind or TRON Lightcycle / Run. Fair warning: you’ll probably end up hearing about how “cool” these rides were for weeks after.
  • Let Them Explore: Yes, you’re on a family vacation. But, that doesn’t mean you need to spend 24/7 together. Disney’s Parks are safe, so let them go off and do their own thing for an hour or two. This is especially beneficial if you’re also traveling with younger kids. While they’re off doing something they love, you can take the little ones to Dumbo’s play area or the Casey Jr Splash and Soak Zone. Don’t have younger kids? Kick back with a coffee (or a Dole Whip!) and enjoy some quiet time. Just text each other if plans change—easy.
  • Offer Unique Experiences: If you really want to impress them, find things that are going to make them excited. Maybe that’s an After Hours party with no lines and free snacks. Maybe it’s a tour. Whatever it is, they’ll be texting their friends about it before you even leave the Park.
