How To Do Walt Disney World On A Budget

November 11, 2024

If you’ve ever thought about taking your family to Walt Disney World on a budget, it can seem like an impossible dream. For most, one look at the prices is all it takes to cancel your trip before planning has even started.

I get it. It’s expensive. And with so many people claiming that families of 4 are spending $6,000 to take a vacation – not including extras like souvenirs – it leads me to ask one question:

What are you doing??

I don’t mean to be harsh. But when people who don’t specialize in Disney vacations make bold claims that a magical Disney vacation must cost that much, it forces people to overspend—and that’s where I get upset.

Here’s the truth: with some strategic planning, your Disney trip can be magical and budget-friendly. So, let’s dive into how you can make Disney work for your budget, because Disney magic is truly within reach.

Book a Disney Vacation Package

An easy way to stay on budget is to book a package. By bundling your resort, park tickets, and options, you avoid the hassle of separate bookings and save more than you would booking everything a la carte. Here’s why:

  • Rates are locked in: With a $200 deposit, you lock in today’s rates – protecting you from price increases. Once locked, your price won’t go up, though it may go down if discounts become available.
  • Pay Over Time: Paying in installments rather than all at once makes budgeting easier and less stressful.
  • No Hidden Fees or Add-Ons: Disney Packages are upfront about costs—no hidden Resort fees or surprise charges at check-out. Many off-site hotels add fees and may charge for shuttles to Disney Parks. You may also need reservatinos for the shuttles. This is all information that often isn’t made clear until you’re already there.
  • Flexible Cancellation Policies: If plans change, packages offer peace of mind. You get a full refund (including the deposit) if canceled up to 30 days before. Booking items separately often means dealing with different refund policies and non-refundable options.

“No Ticket” Days and Free Disney Experiences

Most people think they need to head to the Parks every day of their trip. Not only does this drive up the cost, but it can also leave you absolutely exhausted. Plan a couple of “no ticket” days and take advantage of Disney’s many free or low-cost activities.

Here are a few options to make your “no ticket” days magical:

  • Disney Springs: Enjoy live entertainment, a few rides, unique shops, and delicious dining options.
  • Boardwalk: Catch live street performers, play carnival games, ride a surrey bike, or take a leisurely stroll along the water.
  • Disney Resorts: Check the activity calendar for movie nights, arts and crafts, or marshmallow roasting. You can also have a poolside picnic and relax all day.
  • Fort Wilderness: Enjoy horseback riding, pony rides for kids, and Chip and Dale’s campfire sing-a-long.
  • Ferry Rides: All transportation is free on Disney property. Take a scenic ferry ride and enjoy the views.
  • Golf: Disney World has two mini-golf courses, footgolf, and professional golf courses. Mini-golf is budget-friendly, and you can play a round for free when you stay at a Disney Resort and get your Magical Extras card.
  • Water Parks: If you’re staying at a Disney Resort, you’ll get access to the Water Parks for free on check-in day in 2025. It’s the perfect way to cool off and start your Disney adventure without extra costs.

Skip The Park Hopper Upgrade

Do you really need those Park Hoppers? If this is your first Walt Disney World trip, the answer is likely going to be no. While the Park Hopping can be tempting, it’s an added cost that isn’t always necessary – especially for families on a budget.

Of course, there are things to consider. If Happily Ever After is cancelled for weather on your Magic Kingdom day, you won’t have the option to hop on over to catch the show after Animal Kingdom closes.

But, for most first time Guests, they don’t use them enough to justify the additional cost. And the good news is that each Disney Park is packed with so much to do that you’ll never run out of activities within a single day. By focusing on one park per day, you can save money and spend more time completing your list of “must-do” items.

Use Disney Gift Cards

I feel like a broken record at times. But, I absolutely love to buy discounted Disney Gift Cards and use them to pay for everything – my trip, meals, snacks, and souvenirs.

You can find discounted Disney Gift Cards at Target and certain wholesale stores, or use cash-back credit card rewards to buy them. By getting them at a discount, you can use the discount to pay for things you were already planning to buy.

Disney Gift Cards are also a great way to set a spending limit. You can load up what you plan to spend in advance and use the card for on-property purchases. This approach keeps your spending in check and helps you avoid coming home to a surprising credit card bill. Plus, kids love having their own card to spend on treats and souvenirs, making it an exciting (but controlled) part of the trip.

If you’re saving for a future Disney vacation, consider putting a little on a Disney Gift Card every month. Before you know it, you’ll have a substantial amount set aside, which takes some of the stress out of budgeting for a big trip.

Speak To A Travel Advisor

Many people turn to OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) like Expedia for their vacation planning, thinking it’s the simplest option.

I get it—there’s often skepticism about working with a Travel Advisor. But here’s the truth: a Travel Advisor gives you more than just a package price. We help you find the best deals, manage all the details, and save you both time and money—as well as insider info that you’ll never find on Google or a Facebook Group.
