Avoid Bad Advice and Scams While Planning Your Vacation

April 30, 2024

We all know how easy it is to find information online. And as great as it is to Google a question and receive an instant answer, there’s also a downside. So, I wanted to address a topic that has been bothering me for quite some time. And that’s how to spot and avoid bad advice and scams online.

Let me know if this sounds like you: You’re planning your family’s next vacation to Walt Disney World.

You’re excited to plan your Disney vacation, so you look online to seet how much your vacation will cost you. Maybe you also check out a few things you saw on social media.

You start seaching the internet to see if you can find deals and ways to make your trip both magical and budget-friendly. You get a bunch of recommendations, so you build out your itinerary using the tips you’ve heard about.

However, you get to Walt Disney World and suddenly things aren’t quite like you thought they’d be. And the excitement of being on a Disney vacation quickly turns into frustration, confusion, and sometimes anger when things don’t go your way.

Unfortunately, it’s a scenario many travelers can relate to.

If you’re one of the lucky ones, things go as planned and you have a great vacation. But, for those who fall victim to scams or follow bad advice from a stranger on the internet, it can have a really bad outcome that can cost a lot to fix.

And those are the situations I’m trying to avoid.

Facebook Groups and Other Online Forums

Online Forums, like Facebook Groups, can be a great place to gather recommendations. They’re full of people, just like you, who have firsthand knowledge of destinations, hotels, attractions, and travel tips.

However, misinformation and outdated advice spread like crazy in these groups.

It’s also important to remember that the people on these sites don’t know you, your budget, or your travel style. They also don’t have a personal investment in your vacation. So, even if their intentions are good, if their information is wrong or outdated, they don’t have to deal with the outcome. You do.

To avoid bad advice and scams, consider the following tips:

  • Verify Recommendations: Before acting on any recommendation, do more research to see if what they’re saying is true. Check with official sources, reputable travel websites, or Certified Travel Advisors to ensure everything is accurate.
  • Question the Source: When was the last time this person traveled? If it’s been more than 6 months, the information may already be outdated.
  • Be Critical: If you hear the same advice being said over and over again, question if there’s any evidence to prove what’s being said. Just because people are saying the same thing, it doesn’t make it good advice. Some people just echo what other people say because it sounds good.
  • Use it as a Starting Point: Treat Facebook Groups like a Google search. Use the information as a starting point instead of relying solely on group recommendations to plan out your entire vacation.
  • Participate: Actively engaging in Groups may actually give you better results. If you ask a question and then leave, you’re likely going to get simple, surface-level answers. But, the more people start to recognize your name and understand the type of trip you’re planning, you’ll probably get better information that you can actually apply to your vacation.

Third Party Vendors

The problem that I have with third party vendors is that it can be hard to tell a good one from a bad one. And because it’s not always obvious, unfortunately, many families fall victim to these scams and misleading offers.

Before handing over your money, do these things first:

  • Do your homework: Understand who you’re giving your money to. Thoroughly research their reputation, reviews, and credentials. Do they have any affiliations with recognized travel organizations?
  • Compare this deal against the destination’s offer: Don’t buy something just because it has a low price. Many times, there’s a reason for the lower cost. So, don’t forget to see what it includes to ensure you’re actually getting a good deal.
  • Read the Fine Print: Pay attention to the terms and conditions, cancellation policies, refund procedures, and any hidden fees or restrictions. Clear communication and transparency are important!
  • Check How They Collect Payments: Check their webite. Are they using secure payment methods to protect your financial information and avoid potential fraud?
  • Seek Recommendations: Ask for recommendations from trusted sources, such as friends, family, or Certified Travel Advisors who have experience dealing with reputable third-party vendors.

It’s important to note that not all third party vendors are bad. Here are a few good third party vendors that I use and recommend to others.

Contact A Travel Agent

It’s true that Travel Advisors price, plan, prepare, and book your trip. But, that just scratches the surface of what it is we actually do. In addition to everything I just mentioned, we take the time to understand your specific preferences, budget, and travel style. So, not only do you ensure your family’s dream vacation doesn’t get derailed by bad advice and scams, you get a vacation that’s catered to your family’s specific needs and wants. And you get that peace of mind you’re looking for.

Just remember: Whether you choose to work with a Travel Agent or plan on your own, reliable information will be the key to a successful and enjoyable trip.

So, how do you spot a good Travel Advisor? Well, here’s a few things to consider:

  • Industry Experience: How many years has that Travel Advisor been working in travel? What is their specialty? And make sure that the Travel Advisor understands the destination you’re traveling to.
  • Client Testimonials and Reviews: Check for Client testimonials and reviews. Positive feedback and repeat business are indicators of a trustworthy Advisor.
  • Payment Methods and Client Services: Understanding how payments are made and how an Advisor works is crucial. I prioritize transparency and security. That’s why I work with a platform that maintains PCI-DSS compliance and partners with a PCI Security Standards Council approved Qualified Security Assessor (QSA). This ensures that each transaction goes directly from my Client to the destination, providing a secure and seamless experience for everyone.
  • Customized Itineraries: A good Travel Advisor listens to what you’re looking for and creates a customized itinerary that matches your preferences and budget. You can avoid bad advice and scams by working with a Travel Advisor who understands what you’re looking for and offers advice that is in your best interest.
  • Professionalism and Communication: Communcation is big in the Travel Industry. A reliable Advisor will be attentive and respond in a timely manner throughout the planning process and during your trip.
