I don’t make these often, but when I do, they get eaten up FAST! They taste just like the fried dough you’d find at a carnival or an amusement park. And you would be surprised just how easy they are to make.
No fancy equipment here!
Ingredients:
- Biscuits
- Cinnamon Sugar (or any other flavor you like)
- Vegetable Oil
Equipment:
- Pot or Deep-Fryer
- Tongs
- Cookie cutter or other round object to cut dough
- Bowl
If you have a deep fryer, you can certainly use that, but since I don’t have one, I use a pot with a little bit of vegetable oil. I use the smallest and deepest pot I have (in case some oil splashes up) and fill it just enough oil to get the job done. I set my stove to just under medium heat (you may have to adjust for your oven).
While the oil is heating up, combine cinnamon and sugar together in a bowl and set aside. Mix as much or as little as you’d like. There’s really no wrong way to do this.
Open up a tube of rolls (I got mine for $0.99 at Aldi) and cut holes in the middle. I use a tool used for cupcakes because that’s all I have, but if you have a small, round cookie cutter, that would be even better. Don’t throw the middles away!
When the oil has heated up, drop the dough in one at a time. The donut holes are usually done in about 30 seconds, while I usually leave the donuts in there for for about 45-60 seconds per side. They will turn a nice golden color. Make sure you wait until it darkens up a little…or else the inside will be a mushy, doughy mess.
Place the donut into the cinnamon sugar (or other topping you like). I place it right into the bowl since it helps the sugary goodness stick to the donut. I found that if I wait a few minutes, the cinnamon sugar doesn’t stick as well. However, I found that the opposite is true of powdered sugar. In the past, when I coated the donut right out of the pot, the powdered sugar tended to melt and make the donut all sticky. So, if you plan on using powdered sugar, I would wait a few minutes (at least) before attempting to coat the donut.
Last, but not least…EAT!
